MARKET HIGHS CONTINUE

“The stock market has set a number of new market highs recently... So, what does this mean? For some investors, it instills confidence and they want to put money into the market. Other investors think a market high means a drop is coming so they want to be cautious.”

The lines above are from my monthly newsletter a year ago, December 2016. Well, a year later and the market highs have only gotten higher. I also wrote:

“As of Dec. 5 the S&P 500 closed at 2,204.71 and the Dow closed at 19,216.24.”

Here are the updated numbers, as of Dec. 5, 2017 the S&P 500 closed at 2,629.57 and the Dow closed at 24,180.64. Other things that have changed are that valuations are higher and general economic data has improved. What hasn’t changed is my advice. As I stated last year, it’s important to stick to your strategy, which should be designed with your specific financial objectives in mind. If you don’t have a specific investment strategy or financial plan and would like to see what this looks like and how it may improve your financial picture, contact me to set up an appointment.

For those of you interested in where the market may be heading (though nobody knows for sure), below is Blackrock’s (the largest money manager in the world) 2018 investment outlook.

A synchronized global expansion has room to run in 2018. Strong corporate earnings and steady growth support our belief that investors will get compensated for risk-taking in equities, particularly outside the U.S. But 2017 will be a tough act to follow. Geopolitical risks, inflation and other factors could make the road ahead more challenging.

An investor cannot invest directly in an index. Past performance does not guarantee future results. The Standard & Poor's 500 (S&P 500) is an unmanaged group of securities considered to be representative of the stock market in general. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is a price-weighted index of 30 actively traded blue-chip stocks.
