Q4 and 2023 Market Review

2023 finished strong with a nice rally across markets in Q4. US stocks were up 12.07%, international stocks were up 10.51%, and emerging markets were up 7.86%. Bonds in the US were up 6.82% and global bonds were up 5.36%.

It was refreshing to have a strong quarter, and overall year for 2023, especially following such a poor 2022. Though 2023 was good, the stock market was still chasing highs set in January of 2022, but the 2023 rally made up a lot of ground in getting close to those peaks. Overall returns for the year were 25.96% in the US. 17.94% for international stocks, and 9.83% for emerging markets. The bond market still has some ground to cover to get back to prior highs, but returns of 5.53% in the US and 8.32% globally were moves in the right direction. It is also refreshing to be able to earn some meaningful interest from bonds, which has been a challenge as rates were historically low for years.
